BioSure HIV is the UK’s first home HIV self test kit and is now available from Freedoms Shop. Freedoms Shop is an NHS sexual health promotion initiative run by Central and North West London Foundation Trust (CNWL).
Because they buy in such large quantities they are able to offer huge discounts on purchases such as condoms and lube, especially if you buy in bulk. They work with some of the biggest brands to give you quality choices at really good prices.
Freedoms Shop work closely with Do It London, a safer sex initiative aimed at increasing the rate of HIV testing and improving the sex life of the capital. In 2015, they started stocking a selection of home sampling and home testing kits for STIs. These kits have been developed to simplify the process of helping at-risk individuals establish whether they have contracted a range of sexually transmitted infections.
The sampling kits can help identify HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, syphilis and hepatitis B and C – users simply have to provide a sample using the kit provided by Freedoms Shop and post them to the address supplied. The results can be given via text or phone.
The testing kits are even easier; the BioSure HIV Self Test will immediately identify your HIV status with no need to send off any samples or forms.
BioSure HIV Self Test Kit
If you’ve been reading for a while you will know how much of a supporter I am of all aspects of safe sex. I’m not saying I never have sex without condoms (because I do) but I make sure I am safe. I also get tested regularly but I am lucky enough to have a clinic close to my home, that is never too busy.
For many people that’s just not possible, either they don’t have a clinic, it’s too busy to get an appointment, or it’s just not convenient. Test kits like this are a brilliant idea for those people. You can get results in the privacy of your own home in just 15 minutes.
Inside the box you get:
- 1 x BioSURE HIV Self Test device
- 1 x Single Use Safety Lancet
- 1 x Plaster
– 1 x How To Test Guide
– 1 x Your Result Guide
– 1 x Next Steps Guide
– 1 x Product Insert
– 1 x Opaque Disposal Envelope
It’s very easy to do the test, you get a little pinprick clicker (safety lancet). You press it against your finger and it breaks the skin. I have to admit building up the nerve to actually press the clicker took me a lot longer than I am really willing to admit to. However, once I’d found my courage it was a simple job. All you do is squeeze a few drops and hold the tip of the test device to your finger, filling the tip with blood. Then you press this into the buffer pot. You need to do this on a level surface and make sure you press firmly. The tip of the test device needs to go right to the bottom of the buffer pot. Then you wait.
I was amazed by how much my finger bled, so if you have issues with blood this may not be one for you to do. I took the photo above, put the camera down and when I looked back down blood was dripping down my hand. I went and washed it off and put the plaster on, and it was fine though.
The results are easy to see, and very clear, so there is no need to worry that you need to be scientific to be able to read them.
This is a great product. Really easy to use, and definitely something I would buy in the future if the need arose.
