Horatio Slice Review

Book Review

Around 6 weeks ago I was part of the Horatio Slice book launch blog tour. I’d been lucky enough to read the first chapter way back when it was first being edited, and I’d been desperate to find out what happened. So when the author, Oleander Plume asked me if I’d like to be part of the book tour I jumped at the chance. She was also kind enough to send me the ebook, so I could finally find out what happened after chapter 1.

Horatio Slice: Guitar Slayer of the Universe

horatio sliceFrom Go Deeper Publishing

Paperback, 538 pages, 14 x 3.1 x 21.6 cm

Oleander Plume writes light-hearted (but explicit) erotica with a heavy dose of humor. While she writes in a variety of styles, her favorite gender pairing is M/M. Or M/M/M. Or M/M/M/M. Who’s counting, anyway? She lives in Chicago with her husband, two daughters, and a couple of obnoxious cats.

Horatio Slice is NOT dead. Gunner Wilkes knows a secret. Heartthrob rock star Horatio Slice is not dead. Sure, Gunner may turn heads with his big brain, good looks, and gym-built body, but his mind is on one thing only: returning his all-time favourite rocker and secret fanboy crush to Earth.

The first time I read this it was in ebook form, and I read it really quickly. My kindle doesn’t tell you the number of pages, and I assumed this was a fairly short book, until I got the paperback and realised this is a monster epic. 500+ pages zip by so fast you won’t believe it. I love a book that draws you in, keeps you interested, and makes you forget how big it actually is. Horatio Slice does just that.

The first chapter is a perfect lesson in storytelling; it draws you in, makes you curious, and gets you to keep reading. The rest of the book lives up to the expectations created in chapter one. Oleander’s sharp wit, incredible descriptions, and amazing characterisations brings this book to life in a very engaging way.

There is a huge cast of characters but they are introduced in a natural way, that manages to make each one stick in your mind as an individual. I wish there had been more time to get to know the surrounding cast as well as the main characters but I don’t feel it was detrimental to the story, in fact I feel it allowed me to connect to Horatio, Gunner, Snake and Sugar more deeply. I cared what happened to them. I cared about Horatio’s story.

However, the story and characters aren’t all that Horatio Slice: Guitar Slayer of the Universe has going for it. The sex is HOT!!! And there is a lot of it. Sometimes, when you’re writing multiple sex scenes it can be difficult not to have them all coming out sounding repetitive. Oleander absolutely nails this issue. Each scene brings something fresh, and they are really hot (did I already mention that?). So hot in fact I had to stop reading it in public…

I can’t wait to read more of Horatio Slice’s adventures.

Great story, plenty of action, and characters you will love. It’s hot sexy space pirates…why wouldn’t I recommend it?!?

Horatio Slice Guitar Slayer of the Universe

Book Launch Blog Tour

Today I am very excited to be welcoming, Oleander Plume to HornyGeekGirl as part of the book launch blog tour for Horatio Slice: Guitar Slayer of the Universe. She is going to be sharing with us the process of designing the graphics for her characters. Oleander wrote one of my favourite anthologies, so I was thrilled to be asked to be part of this tour. Without further ado I will pass you over to Oleander…

Horatio Slice is NOT dead.

Gunner Wilkes knows a secret. Heartthrob rock star Horatio Slice is not dead. Sure, Gunner may turn heads with his big brain, good looks, and gym-built body, but his mind is on one thing only: returning his all-time favorite rocker and secret fanboy crush to Earth.

Yes, there are VAMPIRE PIRATES

Fame and stardom were starting to wear thin for Horatio Slice, but when he was sucked through a magical portal while on stage at Madison Square Garden into a jail cell in a strange dimension called Merona, his confusion quickly cleared upon meeting his sexy, dark-haired cellmate, a vampire pirate named Snake Vinter, who filled Horatio in about life in the universe, jumping from dimension to dimension, and craftily avoiding the wrath of gnarly-mask-wearing leather queen King Meridian—a guy nobody wants to cross.

The metal ship is named Frances.

And on Snake’s metal ship live eight identical blond Humerians, who proudly display their cocks and assholes in carefully crafted trousers, as well as a wild assortment of untamable, cock-hungry travelers and stowaways. But someone has hacked into Frances’ mainframe, demanding that Snake and crew deliver Horatio Slice to King Meridian, or feel his wrath.

All the zany magical comedy of Mel Brooks, an adventure not dissimilar to Indiana Jones meets Barbarella, and men, men, horny men, of all shapes and sizes, Horatio Slice, Guitar Slayer of the Universe is wild, fun, pornographic fiction for anyone who loves the masculine, the feminine, and all identities in between. Even more so, it’s for cravers—for aficionados—of big, hard, pounding cock, and anyone who can handle laughs that won’t stop coming.

Designing Horatio Slice

When Jacob Louder sent me the rough draft of the book cover, I fell in love. The artwork he chose to represent Horatio was an uncanny likeness of the person who had before only existed in my head.

horatio slice

It also reminded me of my favorite computer game, The Sims.

I started playing The Sims when the first version came out. A friend let me borrow her copy and after a week, I gave it back to her and said, “For the love of everything, keep this game away from me, it’s taking over my life!”

A few years later, I acquired The Sims 2, and the addiction started all over again, until I purchased a new laptop and discovered the game wouldn’t work with Windows 10. I thought my Sims playing days were over, until I tried The Sims 4.

And now my life is over.

Sure, the game play isn’t as enjoyable as the Sims 2, but the graphics are amazing. The best part about this new version, however, is the updated Create A Sim. With it, you can create unique characters with ease since the interface allows you to tweak even the smallest details.

Jake’s book cover gave me ideas. Crazy ideas. What if I created Sims versions of all the characters in the book? What if I then captured these images and used them for promotion, or swag, or my own personal prurient interests? Yes, yes, YES!

While writing the book, I found photos of models who closely resembled the men in my head. I used these photos to inspire my Sims dudes.

Here’s Horatio:

And, Gunner (who I think is exceptionally adorable):

horatio slice

Before getting them right, I had to download a lot of custom content, especially hair. Gunner, being a huge Horatio fan, wears his hair in a similar style to Horatio, so I used the same hair for both. Creating Snake was even harder. How would I give him his famous metallic silver eyes? Once again, custom content to the rescue. Don’t stare at him too long, he’ll hypnotize you into doing all sorts of things:

horatio slice

Onto Sugar. Finding hair and his pretty green eyes was easy. But what about his gun? Well, let me tell you, those custom content geniuses can make anything!

horatio slice

Once I created the characters, getting decent shots of them in-game proved challenging. I pored over many a DIY tutorial on YouTube and practiced until I got them right. Besides hair, eyes, and skin tones, those CC geniuses create things called “pose packs” which make your characters behave. I even found Horatio a guitar!

horatio slice

There are even pose packs for kissing. And beyond. How did I get shots like this one?

horatio slice

Heh heh. That’s for me to know and you to…nah, I’ll tell you, but you’ll have to wait until August 1st, when I’ll reveal my other secrets to Tabitha Rayne. In the meantime, if you want to read the scene that inspired this:

The Assignment by Jade A. Waters Book Launch Blog Tour

Book Launch Blog Tour

Today I am very excited to be hosting Jade A. Waters as part of her blog tour for the launch of her newest book, The Assignment. I will hand you straight over to Jade.

the assignment

The ‘Interview’

Ladies and gentleman. I am so excited. First, because the lovely Horny Geek Girl has invited me here today (thank you, darling!). And second…

Because I’ve wrangled you an interview with Dean Sova!

Yes, you read that right—Dean Sova! That super yet dominant fella that Maya’s after in The Assignment. And I got him. Here!

So, listen…while I do know all sorts of things about Dean, I thought it was time I dig for you. The Assignment is told from Maya’s perspective, and though we get to know Dean well, I happen to know we find out even more about him in book 2, The Discipline. That said, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give you a little more insight into Dean now. Consider it a sort of beyond-the-book detour into his life, in which I sweet-talked this sexy man (seriously, those slate gray eyes!) into an interview just for you. Dean’s a busy guy—what with all those beautiful buildings he keeps crafting when he isn’t hanging out with flirty, sassy Maya Clery—so I only get him for a short bit. But without any further ado…I’d like to welcome Dean to this page today.

Jade: Welcome, Dean!

Dean: Hello, Jade. [He sits comfortably back in his chair, looking sharp as ever in jeans and a thermal sweater.]

J: Well, look at you all calm and casual. It must be this aura of yours—you project lots of confidence. You really have it together.

D: I try.

J: Then, I have a bunch of questions to pull you apart. How about that? Are you ready?

D: [Chuckles.] Always.

J: Let’s start light. Tell our readers a little about yourself.

D: Okay. I’m Dean Sova. I’m 39. I’m an architect in the Bay Area. My company is Sova Associates, and we’ve been around a long time. I have an office in San Francisco, and I live in Half Moon Bay—but I grew up in Rock Hall, Maryland.

J: That’s a hike. How’d you get over here?

D: I followed a great man and a solid whim.

J: Niko, your pseudo-mentor, yeah?

D: That’s correct. He’s off sailing the world, now, but I stayed. I like it here. I’ve made it home.

J: Yes, let’s talk about your home life. What do you do in your spare time? Clearly, there’s a lot of good fun with Maya. [Dean flashes a playful smile, and since he hasn’t shaved off his five o’ clock shadow, I’m seeing why Maya finds this so damn sexy.] Dude. Stop. You’re killing me.

D: [Snickers and shifts in his chair.] All right. Fun…let’s see. I enjoy hanging with my brothers, Evan, Luka, and Dylan. Also, my niece, Katie. The five of us do a lot of sailing around the bay. I like some down time, too—with Maya, and at home. I like to cook, grab a drink, watch TV. And I read a lot.

J: What do you like to read?

D: Everything. Mostly the news, nonfiction books, memoirs. I read a bit on architecture, obviously, but I’m into fiction, too. Suspense and thrillers, and such. Sometimes lighter fare.

J: Gotcha. And TV-wise—Game of Thrones or Parks and Recreation?

D: Mmm…I do like comedy, but Game of Thrones, hands down. There’s a lot of tension and drama there. Violence. Sex. Good stuff. There’s no messing around and fading to black, either. It’s blatant. I like that.

J: That’s your thing, isn’t it? Directness? Maya loves that about you.

D: I think she does. But I like it about her, too. What’s the point of dancing around the truth? If you know what you want, you go for it.

J: You wanted her.

D: Oh, yes. She’s…amazing.

J: What about her made you want to shift into the roles you did? You’re pretty easygoing, and yet you definitely have this in-control, naturally dominant thing going on.

D: Well, I am…but she certainly brought more of it out of me. It’s something about the way she carries herself. She’s confident, independent, and fun…but she’s got that underlying enthusiasm for exploration in the same way I do. She knows what she wants, and she’s not afraid to say so. I love it when she tells me her thoughts, and her desires.

J: Yes. You two are really into the words. [Dean nods.] So what inspired that first assignment?

D: [Smiles.] Part is that vibe I got from her, the exploration bent. That’s something I love about her…about us. I still don’t know how it hit so hard. I mean, I’d played that way a little before, but not much. She, though…she just struck me. And when I gave her the assignment, I wanted to see how direct she’d be. She’s not scared to voice things, which I find incredibly sexy—her willingness to go there, try it out. I also wanted to see how creative she’d get with it…hence asking her to do what I did.

J: Thank you for keeping that vague. Can’t go giving away your assignment here—though you do end up offering a few, all through the entire series.

D: Right. [Dean is quiet for a while.]

J: You’re doing that mysterious, pensive thing. What’s that about? Sure, sometimes you’re thinking up some…um…experiences for you and Maya. But occasionally, you tend to hold your cards close.

D: I’m not trying to be mysterious—I’m just gauging the scene. Feeling it out. Observing, and getting to know who I’m dealing with. [He laughs at my raised eyebrow.] But I will reveal more as I get to know you better.

J: Sounds like my cue to tell the readers that we find out a bunch more about you in The Discipline.

D: True.

J: Okay. Let’s bring it back to now, Dean. Since I know you’re pressed for time—

D: Yes. I’m meeting Maya in a few.

J: Ah. That’s sweet. [He grins mischievously.] Okay, so not sweet. I get it. [I drop my notecards.] Jesus Christ. Where was I? Oh, yes. I’m going to throw out five completely random questions for you. Sound good? And no thinking on your response, okay? Just spit out the first answer that comes to you.

D: Ready.

J: Cool. If you weren’t an architect, what would you be?

D: Something sailing related. I might teach with my brother, Evan. I love being on the water.

J: And there’s a lot of it here. Isn’t our area great? [He nods.] Okie doke, next question: glass half full or half empty?

D: Half full. No question.

J: Mmm-hmm. I thought you and Maya might have this in common. Next up…what do you think is the most important value in a relationship?

D: Are these speed dating questions, Jade?

J: Maybe… Or maybe I’m just researching. You know, for Maya.

D: I see. [He narrows his eyes. Oh, dang. Maya mentions that’s sexy. It is.] I’m going to go with openness.

J: Nice. I will report this back to Maya. Eh-hm. Now time for our last two questions… First, what makes you laugh?

D: Lots of things! Comedy, for one. And my niece. She’s adorable and five, so funny things get said. And of course, there’s Maya, with some of the sassy things she says. She’s got a mouth on her, that one.

J: Uh-huh. She does… [Both of us laugh.] Since that tends to get you two into particular situations…my last question. What’s your preference: rope, leather cuffs, metal ones, or something else?

D: Tough call. They’re all quite fun. But…I’m going to go with rope.

J: And you’re rather good with that, aren’t you? [Dean grins.] Yep. All righty! On that note, I suppose I should let you go. Hopefully our readers have gotten a little perspective on you.

D: I hope so.

J: Thanks so much for being here.

D: No problem. Enjoy your day.

J: You too!

Okay, all. There you have it: Dean Sova, in person! I hope for those of you who have already dipped into The Assignment, that you found out a few things to add to your take on him. And for those of you who haven’t, I hope you’ll join Maya and Dean on their adventures, soon!

In the meantime—a huge thank you to Horny Geek Girl for having us over!

The Assignment

the assignmentThe Assignment is the first book in Jade’s Lessons in Control series.

What would you do if someone offered to fulfill your wildest fantasies?

Dean Sova is everything Maya Clery craves. From the first touch, their connection is intense. After leaving her troubled past behind, Maya thought she was happy—she is happy—but meeting Dean forces her to acknowledge dark needs she longs to explore yet has never had the courage to face.

Her perfect match, Dean encourages Maya to set loose the submissive urges inside her in a series of assignments intended to open her mind and test the limits of pleasure…but Maya isn’t sure she can fully let go of her inhibitions.

What would you do if someone offered to fulfill your wildest fantasies?

The answer seems obvious. You take the offer and hope the price isn’t too high.

Sexy Little Pages is a sex-positive publishing venture supporting and promoting erotica authors and editors. As a society we’re ashamed of sex and sexuality but we should celebrate it. Sex is an integral part of life, whether it’s fun, filthy, flirtatious, unfulfilling, an escape from reality or something else entirely. Our needs, expectations and fantasies are all different so we aim to publish for everybody and every body, across the whole delicious spectrum of gender, ability, and desires.

Inked is a great collection of erotica, with nine stories there is sure to be something to please anyone. I especially enjoyed Her Midnight Roses by Zak Jane Kier. You can find an excerpt below:

Her Midnight Roses

Mac hefted the new, vicious flogger with the knotted rubber tails and brought it down with a splashy crack on the arse of the woman he’d bent over the whipping bench. She yelped, then giggled, so he tried to make the next stroke harder and the third one harder than that. He liked screams, not giggles. The woman, a dumpy blonde whose name he’d already forgotten, let out a yelp that sounded a bit more like she was feeling it, and he swung again. The music playing in the background was some shitty grime or urban or whatever the fuck they called it, and it was putting him off, interfering with his ability to find his natural rhythm. He stepped back for a moment, shaking out the tails of the whip and glancing from side to side, wondering how much of an audience he had. There were a few men standing around and he got the impression they were watching him appreciatively, but he supposed they might have been just as enthralled by the blonde woman’s naked backside, now bearing the marks of his skill. She had good skin, he’d say that for her, even if she was overweight.

He laid on the flogger again, delivering a succession of blows fairly quickly, not particularly inclined to take his time over it. She’d been easy enough to pick up: too easy, really. She was probably desperate, and while he didn’t mind a bit of desperation in a woman, he didn’t see the need to use the likes of this one for any more than a quick warm up. There were plenty of other women in the place, and bound to be one or two who were sevens or higher while this one, even with her nice smooth skin, was never going to rate above a five. He didn’t think he could even be bothered to make her suck him off once he’d finished flogging her.

Girl On The Net – How A Bad Girl Fell In Love – Giveaway

Girl On The Net

How A Bad Girl Fell In Love

On Thursday I celebrated the launch of Girl on the Net‘s new book, How a Bad Girl Fell in Love with a glowing review, which you can read here.

How a Bad Girl Fell in Love is part confessional, part drunken-rant-on-the-bus from the writer of one of the UK’s most popular sex blogs. Below is an excerpt, which I had to pick at random because actually choosing a quote was just too hard.

how a bad girl fell in love

When I told Mark about the sex blog, he was far more chilled than Adam. Perhaps because it was still early days: we hadn’t yet had the kind of sex he’d be nervous to tell his friends about. While he’d have loved the idea of calling me his girlfriend, he knew that’d mean a pretty swift separation without even a goodbye blow job. I was just a girl he liked, who met up with him twice a week or so, then rubbed against him in the hallway of his flat until one or both of us made a come face. We were new, casual, and definitely not significant. So, as with so much else in life, laid-back Mark made the sex blog chat simple:
“I’m going to write about sex on the internet. Can I write about what we do?”
“Of course. Let’s do it again now, though, just so it’s fresh in your mind.”
Afterwards, when we were sweaty and knackered and definitely not hugging, he sat up with a jolt, lips twitching like he’d just thought of a killer joke:
“I don’t have to actually read it, do I?”

Blink Publishing have very kindly offered to donate a copy of How A Bad Girl Fell in Love for one lucky HornyGeekGirl reader. To be in with a chance you just need to enter using the widget below. The more tasks you fulfil the more entries you receive. I do check entries, so I will know if you haven’t really followed someone. Competition only accounts will be removed.
