Happy Place – Wicked Wednesday #15

Wicked Wednesday

Welcome to my 15th post for Rebel’s Notes‘ Wicked Wednesday, Happy Place. You don’t have to use the prompt but I like the inspiration, and challenge. The prompt for this week was:

happy place

Prompt

I think there’s no need for me to give you any ideas for this prompt, except asking: where is your happy place?

(Please make your stories no longer than 1200 words.)

Happy Place

This post is partly inspired by this blog post from Book Riot.

Books are my happy place.

I’ve always been a big reader. I read proper books from a young age. I could read the Puffin Read-It-Yourself books when I was three. I had to get special permission to read the older kids book when I started school because I was already an advanced reader. I read the entire Chronicles of Narnia at six, and by the time I was 14 I was reading Stephen King and Catherine Cookson. Much to the disgust of the local librarian, she actually called my dad to ask if I was allowed them. He told her he didn’t censor my reading, and neither should she.

I remember doing practice GCSE exercises in English at school, and being marked down because my fiction piece was too ‘bloodthirsty’ (I’d just read The Diary of Jack the Ripper). I went to the head of department myself to ask why I’d been marked down due to the personal preference of the teacher and not marked on the quality of my writing. We had a long conversation about my work, and what I was reading. My grade got changed and I was moved to his tutor group. I had so many great discussions in his class about books. He was brilliant.

When I was younger I used books more as an escape, now I use them to adventure, to learn about things that are outside my scope of experience, to find out about new things I’d like to try, new places I’d like to visit. I think reading books that challenge our beliefs, and the way we think can only be a good thing. It can give us a new perspective on how we see the world.

I love books, they are my happy place.
