Horatio Slice Review

Book Review

Around 6 weeks ago I was part of the Horatio Slice book launch blog tour. I’d been lucky enough to read the first chapter way back when it was first being edited, and I’d been desperate to find out what happened. So when the author, Oleander Plume asked me if I’d like to be part of the book tour I jumped at the chance. She was also kind enough to send me the ebook, so I could finally find out what happened after chapter 1.

Horatio Slice: Guitar Slayer of the Universe

horatio sliceFrom Go Deeper Publishing

Paperback, 538 pages, 14 x 3.1 x 21.6 cm

Oleander Plume writes light-hearted (but explicit) erotica with a heavy dose of humor. While she writes in a variety of styles, her favorite gender pairing is M/M. Or M/M/M. Or M/M/M/M. Who’s counting, anyway? She lives in Chicago with her husband, two daughters, and a couple of obnoxious cats.

Horatio Slice is NOT dead. Gunner Wilkes knows a secret. Heartthrob rock star Horatio Slice is not dead. Sure, Gunner may turn heads with his big brain, good looks, and gym-built body, but his mind is on one thing only: returning his all-time favourite rocker and secret fanboy crush to Earth.

Review

The first time I read this it was in ebook form, and I read it really quickly. My kindle doesn’t tell you the number of pages, and I assumed this was a fairly short book, until I got the paperback and realised this is a monster epic. 500+ pages zip by so fast you won’t believe it. I love a book that draws you in, keeps you interested, and makes you forget how big it actually is. Horatio Slice does just that.

The first chapter is a perfect lesson in storytelling; it draws you in, makes you curious, and gets you to keep reading. The rest of the book lives up to the expectations created in chapter one. Oleander’s sharp wit, incredible descriptions, and amazing characterisations brings this book to life in a very engaging way.

There is a huge cast of characters but they are introduced in a natural way, that manages to make each one stick in your mind as an individual. I wish there had been more time to get to know the surrounding cast as well as the main characters but I don’t feel it was detrimental to the story, in fact I feel it allowed me to connect to Horatio, Gunner, Snake and Sugar more deeply. I cared what happened to them. I cared about Horatio’s story.

However, the story and characters aren’t all that Horatio Slice: Guitar Slayer of the Universe has going for it. The sex is HOT!!! And there is a lot of it. Sometimes, when you’re writing multiple sex scenes it can be difficult not to have them all coming out sounding repetitive. Oleander absolutely nails this issue. Each scene brings something fresh, and they are really hot (did I already mention that?). So hot in fact I had to stop reading it in public…

I can’t wait to read more of Horatio Slice’s adventures.

Overall

Great story, plenty of action, and characters you will love. It’s hot sexy space pirates…why wouldn’t I recommend it?!?

Horatio Slice Guitar Slayer of the Universe

Book Launch Blog Tour

Today I am very excited to be welcoming, Oleander Plume to HornyGeekGirl as part of the book launch blog tour for Horatio Slice: Guitar Slayer of the Universe. She is going to be sharing with us the process of designing the graphics for her characters. Oleander wrote one of my favourite anthologies, so I was thrilled to be asked to be part of this tour. Without further ado I will pass you over to Oleander…

Horatio Slice is NOT dead.

Gunner Wilkes knows a secret. Heartthrob rock star Horatio Slice is not dead. Sure, Gunner may turn heads with his big brain, good looks, and gym-built body, but his mind is on one thing only: returning his all-time favorite rocker and secret fanboy crush to Earth.

Yes, there are VAMPIRE PIRATES

Fame and stardom were starting to wear thin for Horatio Slice, but when he was sucked through a magical portal while on stage at Madison Square Garden into a jail cell in a strange dimension called Merona, his confusion quickly cleared upon meeting his sexy, dark-haired cellmate, a vampire pirate named Snake Vinter, who filled Horatio in about life in the universe, jumping from dimension to dimension, and craftily avoiding the wrath of gnarly-mask-wearing leather queen King Meridian—a guy nobody wants to cross.

The metal ship is named Frances.

And on Snake’s metal ship live eight identical blond Humerians, who proudly display their cocks and assholes in carefully crafted trousers, as well as a wild assortment of untamable, cock-hungry travelers and stowaways. But someone has hacked into Frances’ mainframe, demanding that Snake and crew deliver Horatio Slice to King Meridian, or feel his wrath.

All the zany magical comedy of Mel Brooks, an adventure not dissimilar to Indiana Jones meets Barbarella, and men, men, horny men, of all shapes and sizes, Horatio Slice, Guitar Slayer of the Universe is wild, fun, pornographic fiction for anyone who loves the masculine, the feminine, and all identities in between. Even more so, it’s for cravers—for aficionados—of big, hard, pounding cock, and anyone who can handle laughs that won’t stop coming.

Designing Horatio Slice

When Jacob Louder sent me the rough draft of the book cover, I fell in love. The artwork he chose to represent Horatio was an uncanny likeness of the person who had before only existed in my head.

horatio slice

It also reminded me of my favorite computer game, The Sims.

I started playing The Sims when the first version came out. A friend let me borrow her copy and after a week, I gave it back to her and said, “For the love of everything, keep this game away from me, it’s taking over my life!”

A few years later, I acquired The Sims 2, and the addiction started all over again, until I purchased a new laptop and discovered the game wouldn’t work with Windows 10. I thought my Sims playing days were over, until I tried The Sims 4.

And now my life is over.

Sure, the game play isn’t as enjoyable as the Sims 2, but the graphics are amazing. The best part about this new version, however, is the updated Create A Sim. With it, you can create unique characters with ease since the interface allows you to tweak even the smallest details.

Jake’s book cover gave me ideas. Crazy ideas. What if I created Sims versions of all the characters in the book? What if I then captured these images and used them for promotion, or swag, or my own personal prurient interests? Yes, yes, YES!

While writing the book, I found photos of models who closely resembled the men in my head. I used these photos to inspire my Sims dudes.

Here’s Horatio:

And, Gunner (who I think is exceptionally adorable):

horatio slice

Before getting them right, I had to download a lot of custom content, especially hair. Gunner, being a huge Horatio fan, wears his hair in a similar style to Horatio, so I used the same hair for both. Creating Snake was even harder. How would I give him his famous metallic silver eyes? Once again, custom content to the rescue. Don’t stare at him too long, he’ll hypnotize you into doing all sorts of things:

horatio slice

Onto Sugar. Finding hair and his pretty green eyes was easy. But what about his gun? Well, let me tell you, those custom content geniuses can make anything!

horatio slice

Once I created the characters, getting decent shots of them in-game proved challenging. I pored over many a DIY tutorial on YouTube and practiced until I got them right. Besides hair, eyes, and skin tones, those CC geniuses create things called “pose packs” which make your characters behave. I even found Horatio a guitar!

horatio slice

There are even pose packs for kissing. And beyond. How did I get shots like this one?

horatio slice

Heh heh. That’s for me to know and you to…nah, I’ll tell you, but you’ll have to wait until August 1st, when I’ll reveal my other secrets to Tabitha Rayne. In the meantime, if you want to read the scene that inspired this:

Summarise — Wicked Wednesday #16

Wicked Wednesday

Welcome to my 16th post for Rebel’s Notes‘ Wicked Wednesday, Summarise. You don’t have to use the prompt but I like the inspiration, and challenge. The prompt for this week was:

summarise

PROMPT – Summarise
To summarize is to give a brief statement of the main points of (something). It’s almost the end of the year and many of us look back at previous months and the things we have accomplished during the year. But maybe you prefer not to look back, but to look forward? Or maybe the image above struck you the same way it did me… why can I never tell the short version of a story but always feel the need to include all the details? No matter how you interpret this prompt, share your stories for this week’s Wicked Wednesday.

Summarise

I feel like it’s been a bit of a strange year for me. I’ve had some highs and lows, some ups and downs, but overall I think I am in a much better place than I was this time last year. So many things have happened that I could never have expected.

  • I had a short story published in Tie Me Up, an anthology edited by the wonderful F. Dot Leonora, who I finally got to meet in person at Eroticon in August.
  • I bought my domain. And owning HornyGeekGirl.com meant I could start accepting advertisers.
  • I was paid to write an article for a website other than my own.
  • I attended my first consumer and trade shows as HornyGeekGirl…….and I got business cards.
  • Because I attended the shows I got to meet some great bloggers within the community, as well as connecting with companies who I now work with.
  • I realised a few things about myself, and while in some ways I am changing in some ways I feel like I am finally finding my way back to the real me.
  • I had my first caning – There is a blog post coming on this. It was sooooooo good.
  • I delivered my first caning. That was fun. Huge thank you to Lola who volunteered to be my guinea pig, and let me loose on her arse with a flogger, paddle, tawse, and cane. 😀
  • I had some really, really, really fucking good sex. I’d forgotten just how good, truly good sex can be. Also forgotten what a pain condoms can be if you don’t have the perfect size.

A summary of 2015 wouldn’t be complete without a shout out to some of the people who have really helped me out this year. So here they are:

  • Oleander Plume – My adopted big sis is my sounding board, proof reader, graphic designer, and general all round cheerleader. I’d have given up so many times if it wasn’t for her.
  • Cara Sutra – Along with Voluptasse, Cara made me feel so comfortable at ETO, she gave me some great advice, and introduced me to lots of companies. And is now someone I consider a friend.
  • Voluptasse – The lovely Mel, who made me so welcome at ETO and who has been helping me out with advice ever since. Another friend I am glad to have made.
  • F Dot Leonora – This lovely lady is always after me to write a new story for whatever anthology she is currently working on. I appreciate her support so much. Meeting her was one of the highlights of my Eroticon trip.
  • GirlonTheNet – Met her in person at Eroticon, and have to say she is just as amazing as you would expect. She’s helped me out a lot this year with advice, comments, and even thrown work my way.
  • DizzyGirl812 – Who has helped me out with advice on quite a few occasions this year.

I’m sure I’ve missed people but it isn’t intentional. If you have helped me out this year, please know it was very much appreciated.

Online Meet and Greet – Eroticon 2015

In case you have missed it on my Twitter I was lucky enough to win a ticket for Eroticon, thanks to WriteSexRight and Pasante. This will be my first Eroticon and I am excited and nervous in equal amounts.

On her Meet and Greet post the lovely Molly of Molly’s Daily Kiss says:

This is your chance to introduce yourself to the rest of the attendees before actually arriving in Bristol on Friday and hopefully coming along to the actual in person, real life, breathing and talking, Meet and Greet.

If you are one of the many people who have been to Eroticon before you all know how this works but if not, answer the questions below on your own site/blog introducing yourself to everyone and then link your post.

NAME (and Twitter name if you have one)

Cheryl Kaye @hornygeekgirl

Is this your first time at Eroticon? If No, what is your favourite memory from a previous Eroticon and if No, what are you most looking forward to at Eroticon 2015?

It is my first time. Y’all be gentle with me, okay? ;D
Apart from all the amazing talks I am just really looking forward to finally meeting (in person) so many of the people I have ‘met’ online this past year.

Which 3 sessions have you already earmarked as definitely going to?

The Eroticon schedule looks amazing. And I’m having a hard time deciding which sessions to attend. I’d also like to have a session free each day in case I need to decompress  but I have to see the sessions by Girl on the Net, Remittance Girl, and Janine Ashbless.

What drink will you be ordering at the bar on the Saturday night?

Cocktails or gin (hendricks) and tonic, and water.

If you wrote an autobiography what would it be called?

Still Breathing……or maybe, Shit Happens. :-\

Where are you writing this post and what 5 things can you see around you (not including the device you are writing on)?

I’m sitting at my desk in my bedroom (I live in a shared house). My Xbox and TV, my small fridge-freezer, pencil case and notebooks, my Doxy Massager, and my bookcase of writing books.

And the last one… If you could go out to dinner with any 5 sex bloggers or erotic writers, regardless of whether they are coming to Eroticon or not who would they be?

Oh wow. This is a really tough one. I am going to pick people who I know I’m not going to see at Eroticon, or who I don’t have definite plans to meet. I know that’s sort of cheating but there’s just too many otherwise. So my five are: Oleander Plume, Malin JamesJade A Waters, Eva Gantz (from Cleis Press),  and the Sexy Librarian herself, Rose Caraway. That would be such an amazing and fun dinner. Can you imagine what a great time you’d have with those ladies.

You can find more Eroticon Attendees here.

Here Comes the Sun

story contest

There was a Wicked Wednesday prompt that was lists, and putting her own special spin on it Oleander over at PoisonPenDirtyMind decided to use it as an opportunity to share part of her list of writing prompts. And taking it one step further she invited her readers to use one of the prompts to inspire them to write an entry for her contest.

I decided to use the spontaneous office sex prompt. This is an excerpt of the full story.

Here Comes the Sun

I stare through the window, the rain was so heavy it was like a waterfall running down the glass. It had been pouring for weeks now. Occasionally it stopped but with no break in the clouds it stayed gloomy and grey. It was starting to get to me, everything seemed to be taking me twice as long…which is why I was sitting at my desk after hours on a Friday night. I’d switched the radio on to some golden oldie station when everyone else had left, and slipped my shoes off. Not that being here was doing me any good, I just couldn’t focus. I’d had a crappy few weeks, and the relentless rain wasn’t helping.

“You’re so fucking miserable.” Adam’s parting shot still burnt, mostly because I knew it was true. I’d been so unhappy for so long, I’d known something was going on but he’d told me I was crazy. So I’d kept it to myself, and things went steadily downhill. Three weeks ago I came home to find him waiting for me, his stuff gone from the shelves and cupboards, He’d told me it was over, I hadn’t even managed to get mad I just sighed and told him I knew that. Which was when he’d stormed out, yelling his parting shot at me as he slammed the door.  It was true though, I’d known it was over for months. The great sex turned bad, and then became non-existent. I’d not had a decent fucking in forever. It’s no wonder I was miserable.

I shake myself out of the memory and look back at the papers on my desk. Sighing I pick up my pen and start editing. I’m ten pages in when I pick up my drink swallowing the last of the now cold coffee, I put the mug back down wishing I kept something stronger in my office.
“You look like you need a beer”. I jump up knocking my coffee mug onto the floor. My palms on my desk I look over to the doorway, trying to control my breathing.
“You nearly gave me a heart-attack. I thought everyone had left…and yeah, I’ll take that beer.” I smile and hold out a hand. Kevin walks over, handing me a bottle of beer from the pack he’s carrying before sitting in the chair opposite my desk.

If you’d like to read what happens after they share a beer, watch this space. ;D
